Gourds are what we Lahu worship as a totem, and wood ladles are common utensils for the people of Yunnan. Once I happened to get a few ladles, and I suddenly had a hunch that I could do something with it. I carved figures on them. They gave me a feeling of accomplishment. Then I knew that I could never stop. I used ladles as well as gourds to make carvings and artifacts, and made masks out of them. You see, in my workshop there some many of them (about 700 pieces). For so many years I have given all my feelings, all my love and all my dreams to making these things. I regard them as my children.
